What is CBD and why all the hype? What can CBD do for you?
Everywhere you look you can find CBD for sale, but how do you know if it’s right for you? I want to help break down those uncertainties and explain the science nitty gritty on what CBD is and how your body is naturally primed with receptors to maximum your CBD consumption. My goal through this blog is to spread awareness, facilitate discussion and reduce stigmatism about a plant and in turn, products I believe in. Let’s dive in for South Bend’s first blog post!
What is CBD?
CBD is the shortened name for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol occurs naturally in the flower of the hemp plant. CBD is one of the most abundant active ingredients. CBD is not psychoactive so you don’t get the “high” feeling like you do with THC, which is why it is gaining traction among users. Studies completed by the World Health Organization show there is no indications of abuse or dependence potential. CBD is extracted from plant to be made into foods, oils, topicals and many other products..
Your Endocannabinoid System.
Just like your body has an immune, respiratory, digestive and cardiovascular system (just to name a few), your body also has an endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays an important role in your body by helping regulate important functions like sleep, mood, inflammation and memory. ECS also helps regulate pain in the body. The main goal of your regulatory systems is homeostasis (think homeostasis = happy). In short, the endocannabinoid system helps keep the body in balance by regulating our internal systems.
Many people don’t know this, but their body naturally makes two endocannabinoids called Anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG). These two endocannabinoids work to bond to receptors which are located all over your body. There are two main receptors for CBD and THC: CB1 Receptors which are found in the central nervous system and CB2 Receptors which are found mostly in the peripheral nervous system and in the immune cells. THC bonds to both types of receptors, but CBD modifies the receptor’s ability to bind to cannabinoids and enhances natural levels of endocannabinoids. Below is an image showing where each type of receptor is located and how they interact.

Final Thoughts
The more I continue to learn about hemp and CBD the more I become entranced with this plant. The potential positive benefits and numerous, with little to no negative side effects. You don’t need to suffer when you can rub on a salve or take an oil to help you thrive throughout your day. I’ve been taking CBD for approximately 18 months for overall health. It has been a life changing product for me. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out by submitting a comment on the website or emailing us at southbendhemp@gmail.com.
